Gig Review: Fuzz Club Festival at Effenaar Eindhoven – 01/02 May 2026

This review is a little overdue, delayed by illness but here it is at last!

London based Fuzz Club Records formed officially in 2012 but in embryonic forms had been in existence since the early 2000’s is cemented as a global focus for the underground psych scene. Since 2018 they have hosted a two day festival at Effenaar in Eindhoven Netherlands.

2026 features many luminaries of the deep psych scene and so off we got to experience it first hand. Occurring on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd May there’s a lot of people travelled in especially from the UK.

Friday is off to a fantastic start for us as the first band we catch is the truly great Minami Deutsch. The Japanese krautrock influenced trio know how to lay down hypnotic rhythms and transfixing repetitive melodies. They have moved far enough from their influences – the likes of Can and Neu! to stand on their own. Bluesy and jazzier moments addd texture to their splendid soundscapes and they set the tone and the standard to beat for the rest of the festival. Truly one of our favourite live bands.

Glyders have a different vibe to them, they sound drenched in a US West Coast sound with more than a hint of Countrified sounds and a smattering of Southern Boogie mixed in with a psychedelic sensibility. They have more of a focus on individual songs than overall soundscapes of many other Psych bands which is a welcome change.

A Place to Bury Strangers or just APTBS take the whole soundscape thing and turn it upside down then back to front and just spin it round until it makes no sense and yet is perfectly satisfying. Then of course they take their noise rock wall of sound and throw it all into the audience. Truly a mighty sound and a one of those performances that can be genuinely describes as an experience.

First band for us on the Saturday is LA Witch. Their scuzzed up garage rock psychedelia is perfect for Fuzz Club and the audience love them. Their blistering desert rock meets 1960s garage psych is just perfect here, songs hint at everything from The Brian Jonestown Massacre to Black Sabbath via 13th Floor Elevators. Their songs are hauntingly catchy without being pop and they simultaneously seem to drench their sound in layers of shoegaze effects and yet have clear riff based structures.

Helicon are the band of the moment and this is the second time in three years I’ve seen them at the Fuzz Club Festival. How to describe the sound of a large number of musicians, often playing more than one instrument, makes. Here its dreamy soundscapes, urgent motorik repetitive motifs, reverb drenched vocals the soar out of the music before swirling back into the whole soundscape. They can progress from somnambulistic softly lulling music to a dangerous roar of sound within the same track and it all sounds perfect.

I admit, I was hungry, I was aiming to grab some food and duck out on Causa Sui but someone said words along the lines of ‘don’t do that, you’ll miss one of the best’. So I stayed and yes they were right. Cause Sui, from their philosophical self causing existence to the final notes that ring out across De Effennaar are magnificent. The Danish stoner rock instrumentalists cite jazz and electronic influences but have a core Space Rock feel to them and its relentless, changeable, fascinating and as hypnotic as anything I’ve heard.

Witch a reverse engineered acronym for We Intend To Cause Havoc, are a full on Zamrock band. Formed in the 70s, effectively nullified by political pressure in the 80s and after rereleases of older material brought back into existence in 2012. Their African rhythms and musical sensibilities wrapped around 70s Rock stylings with hints of everything from Fleetwood Mac to James Brown is warm and vibrant. Their funkiness keeps feet tapping (or swathes of the audience dancing) and their sheer full on groove is fun and highly enjoyable.

Firefriend take a completely different direction from many of the Festival Bands. Yes there is the repetition, the krautrock rhythms and wall of fuzzed out noise but its not serving a dreamy escape into a cinematic soundscape. There’s a far punkier and grittier feel to the Sao Paulo formed Brazilian outfit. They are trippy, motorik driven, contain serious melodies and yet throw this at the audience in a confrontational ‘get engaged’ manner that makes them hard to ignore.

Whilst thats  the end of the Festival for us, and a great time it was too, Firefriend provide nice codicil to the proceedings. For those of us not moving on until the Monday Firefriend play a bonus gig at Stage Music Cafe venue. They seem as at home in this smaller venue as they did on the larger Effenaar stage and in some ways I prefer this closer more intimate (as they say) gig. There is fire in Firefriend and if you get too close they can burn.
