Gig Review: The Waterboys touring their new album ‘LIFE ,DEATH AND DENNIS HOPPER’ at The Royal Philharmonic Hall Liverpool – 08 May 2025

The Waterboys opened their set with ‘A Pagan Place’ and ‘Glastonbury’ and had to listen to a fan  bellowing “Whole Of the moon”. The response “I hope your not a track high goer” sent ripples of laughter around had the audience clapping. They continued with quality album tracks and a rousing performance of ‘This Is The Sea’. Mike Scott seemed to change his guitars every other track.

Next came the new material from the album with Mike narrating about the tracks and a slide show Dennis Hopper in various films. ‘Andy’ (about Andy Warhol), ‘Terry’ ( about Terry Southern), ’Michelle’ (about Hoppers wife for eight days Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas) and ‘Golf’.

Barny Fletcher who’d sung backing vocals on the album came on stage to do the same live on the new album tracks. Next came “Don’t Bang The Drum” and it came it at last for the one hit gig goer ‘The Whole Of the Moon’ followed by ‘Spirit’ and ‘The Pain Within’.

The band went off for a short break and finished with ‘A Girl Called Johnny’. Barny did his song dedicated to mother ‘Wasted Sunset’ and it was topped off with my personal fave ‘Fisherman’s Blues’. Overall a very good gig by the multi national folk rock band.
