GIG REVIEW: Nuovo Testamento and Curses at District Liverpool – Sunday 10 November 2024

An early start for this gig (which is a great idea for Sunday night shows) catches us by surprise and we miss Liminal Project.

Curses have just started as we arrive. The duo are laying down dense synth based dark pop. The Berlin via New York and Sicily group have a very 80s feel to them, hints of early new romanticism abound but its edgier and mixed in with some more industrial sounds. There’s intelligent guitar work that fleshes out the sound a lot and often creates the main melodies with the vocals taking a more in the mix role, enigmatic and awash with echo. Danceable, dark and quite compulsive.

Nuovo Testamento are in a similar vein to Curses but more upbeat, relatively poppier and with a more Euro-Disco style. There’s elements of early Madonna in there (especially their stage show) and dancing is what its all about. They veer to the Gothic and there’s an element of Depeche Mode coming to mind. Their songs have character though, each is melodically distinct and memorably different from the others whilst sharing a similarity stylistically.x

The band; keys, Electronic Drums and Vocals, kick up a full on storm of dance with disco 80s tinged synth dark Euro-pop and its enjoyable to watch (or dance along to as considerable parts of the audience are).
